North West 200, Portrush & Causeway Coast

11 – 17 May 2008. Internationally significant motor cycle rally event, circuit around the Coleraine, Portrush area, attracts international motorcycle riders, attracts 150,000+ spectators.

The Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09

Begins in Alicante, Spain on 4 October 2008 with various port stopovers around the globe planned – notably for us, S Africa, India, Middle East, China & US. Stopover in Galway in June 2009.

The Dept of Arts Sports & Tourism have invested 8 Million in the race through Failte Ireland and expects us to generate €43 million for the Irish Economy in return. This is one of the Top 20 sporting events world-wide and has a TV audience of 2 billion.

The opportunities are twofold. Firstly: There will be opportunities around the Port Stopovers. Secondly: the actual Stopover in Galway is expected to be a big spectacle. Failte Ireland are looking at involving Macnas etc. to create a street carnival for the event and encourage as many people as possible to use it as a hook to visit ‘Ireland’s Outdoor Playground’ in the West.

Rally Ireland 29 Jan – 1 Feb 2009

Ireland will open the World Rally Championship in 2009. It will be another cross-border initiative taking place in the North and NorthWest. The Rally is broadcast to 180 Countries and reached an estimated audience of 80million +
