The ‘Limerick’ is a form of comic verse consisting of five anapestic lines. Line 1, 2 and 5 have seven to ten syllables and rhyme with one another. Line 3 and 4 have five to seven syllables and also rhyme with each other.

Whose face was pervaded with smiles
He sung high dum diddle
And played on the fiddle
That amiable man of the Isles"

The history of the 'limerick': The ‘Limerick’ dates back to the 18th century Fili na Maighe (the Gaelic Poets of the Maigue). The original birth place of the ‘Limerick’ is close to Adare in County Limerick. In fact, the River Maigue which gave these poets their name, runs by Adare Manor a luxurious five star hotel in the picture perfect village of Adare. The Maigue Poets, writing in their native Irish, produced a great body of poetry: the themes of these early works included love poems, poems on national affairs and satires on public figures. |
