Fishing

Hooked on Ireland
It doesn't take too long to figure out why keen anglers from all over the world make Ireland their favorite destination. A 5,600 kilometer (over 3,500 mile) coastline, surrounded by the cleanest of seas, allied to a seemingly endless network of lakes and rivers teaming with different varieties of fish makes a pretty convincing case. Whether your forte is coarse, game, pike or sea angling, you'll enjoy the perfect angling break in Ireland.

World Class Fisheries
But that is only part of the story. You can add to that a series of world-class fisheries, charter boats, specialist holiday operators, superb accommodation and top equipment providers throughout the country. And if you're not hooked by now, we haven't even mentioned the beauty of the Irish countryside. And when the fishing day is over, there's the best of craic, music and conversation in welcoming Irish pubs.

Coarse Fishing
One of the least industrialized countries in Europe, Ireland's countryside has two great advantages for coarse fishing. Firstly the beautiful, unspoiled rural landscape makes a perfect backdrop to a days sport, with no danger of overcrowding.
More importantly, though, the loughs, rivers and canals, among the most lightly fished in Europe, are of the highest quality and least polluted you will find. Another great advantage is that there is no closed season, so fishing is allowed throughout the year.

Lower River Bann
Some of the finest coarse fishing can be found in the rivers and lakes of the Shannon, Erne and Lower Bann catchments. The Lower River Bann, Northern Irelands largest river, runs from Lough Neagh to the Atlantic coast and offers outstanding coarse fishing throughout its length. You'll find that many of the better areas have been pegged to facilitate match fishing and offer excellent opportunities for a big catch, not least from bream and roach.

Lough Fishing
Other bountiful areas for the coarse angler are the two largest lakes on the River Shannon, Lough Derg (where Ballina is famous for fishing) and Lough Ree (where you can base yourself at the charming town of Athlone). But you will also find great angling on the Upper and Lower Lough Erne (the historic town of Enniskillen in County Fermanagh is the ideal location here).
Other handy tips include the Royal Canal at Mullingar for specimen tench and carp and the River Barrow for specimen perch.
